Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 13

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 13

BOULDER, Colo. – The Canterbury D1A Top 20 is back for the 2016 season. Last weekend produced five friendlies involving D1A teams, and several intriguing nonconference contests are scheduled between now and Jan. 30, when the Red River opens the spring portion of its season.

This past weekend, reigning National Champion Saint Mary’s fell to San Francisco Golden Gate in a one-sided affair. No. 2-ranked Life did inch closer to the Gaels’ stranglehold at the top of Canterbury’s rankings, but the loss to such a powerful and skilled opponent was deemed not enough to drop Saint Mary’s. Last season, the Gaels lost to Golden Gate in a similar fashion, yet still won its second title in two years.

Conference play won’t heat up until February, leaving only one team improving its standing in this week’s rankings – Arizona. The Wildcats exploded for 59 points while holding Grand Canyon to just three. The 56-point victory pushed the Independent program to No. 15, forcing Wheeling Jesuit to fall one spot to No. 16.

Oklahoma, which won two Red River matches ahead of winter break by a combined 66 points, sits just outside the Top 20. Behind the Sooners are Michigan, Santa Clara, St. Bonaventure, and Wyoming rounding out the top 30.
