Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 14

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 14

BOULDER, Colo. – If Saint Mary’s looked vulnerable to give up its No. 1 ranking in the Canterbury D1A Top 20, the Gaels solidified their spot at the top with wins over Arizona and Arizona State by a combined 153-19.

Second-ranked Life will have its opportunity to prove it still has the horses to make another run to the D1A Final by month’s end. The Running Eagles play South Carolina Jan. 30, and have additional nonconference matches against the likes of Air Force, Arkansas State, Clemson and Navy, as well as their ever-difficult Mid-South Conference schedule.

Other shifts in this week’s rankings saw Cal Poly and Colorado State move up one spot. The Mustangs recently trounced San Louis Obispo RFC, and now sit at No. 8. After opening their season 0-2, the Rams beat Air Force, Wyoming and New Mexico by an average of 55 points per contest to prove they can still put a team to the sword. Colorado State now ranks No. 13.

Santa Clara, a D1A Playoff team in 2014, enters the Top 20 for the first time this season. The Broncos have opened 2016 with solid victories over Stanford and Cal State Maritime, but will be put to the test when Lindenwood pays them a visit Jan. 24. Santa Clara’s gain is LSU’ loss, as the Tigers, and fellow Red River Conference side Oklahoma, sit just outside of the Top 20.
