Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 18

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 18

BOULDER, Colo. – After a weekend in which Saint Mary’s lost to BYU by four points and Life needed a penalty kick at full time to beat Davenport, there was potential for a changing of the guard atop the Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20. Instead, the voting committee ultimately decided the narrow defeat of the defending National Champions was not enough to slide them below a team that was even with Davenport after 79 minutes.

The Panthers’ gusty performance against Life was enough to bump them ahead of Lindenwood, but the real winners of this week’s poll were Cal Poly and Wheeling Jesuit. The Mustangs jump two spots to No. 8 after easily handling No. 20 Santa Clara 66-17. Likewise, the Cardinals move ahead two spots with its impressive nonconference win over Navy.

Few teams have a chance to beat Cal in Berkeley, but after falling to the Bears 82-5 the Utes stumble back two spots to No. 10.

Arizona swapped spots with San Diego State, with the Wildcats moving up to No. 15 and the Aztecs dropping to No. 16. The exchange is unique given Arizona lost and San Diego State won. However, the movement makes plenty of sense in that the Independent squad gave UCLA everything they could handle prior to narrowly losing 31-29, while the Aztecs failed to impress after only defeating UC Santa Barbara by 14 points.
