Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 2

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 2

BOULDER, Colo. – The three ranked teams out of Rugby East avoided upsets this past Saturday, preventing any big shakeups in this week’s Canterbury D1A Top 20. There were, however, two teams that impressed enough in nonconference matches to move up in the rankings.

Kutztown’s 56-17 victory over Empire Rugby Conference’s Stony Brook jumped the Golden Bears ahead of Utah to No. 6. Meanwhile, Michigan pounded Notre Dame 70-31. The Wolverines’ 39-point trouncing was good enough to move the boys in blue up two spots to No. 16 in Canterbury’s weekly poll.

This week, college rugby fans get its first Top 20 match of the year – and it should be a real barnburner given both teams sit in the top ten. No. 8 Wheeling Jesuit, fresh off a win again Iona, host No. 9 Penn State. The Nittany Lions are coming off a win of its own – a 23-10 triumph on the road against St. Bonaventure. The winner of this Rugby East clash is likely to move up in the polls, while the team on the losing end of the match is liable to fall out of the top ten.

Similar to last week, Iona and Texas A&M weren’t too far off from cracking the Top 20, while Santa Clara and Wyoming also climbed closer to No. 20 LSU.
