Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 22

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 22

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – Saint Mary’s and Life continue to their back-and-forth battle over the No. 1 position in Canterbury’s D1A Rugby Top 20. This week the Gaels take over the top-spot from the Running Eagles after their late come-from-behind win over No. 4 Cal.

Life’s performance of the weekend still had the look of a No. 1 team too. The Running Eagles used a superior second-half performance to earn a big win on the road versus Lindenwood, 32-10.

Other than the Battle of the Bay between Cal and Saint Mary’s, the other big nonconference matchup was between the Big Ten’s Indiana and Rugby East’s Penn State. Spearheaded by the return of Men’s Eagle and All-American center Bryce Campbell, the Hoosiers dropped the Nittany Lions, 29-19. As a result, Indiana moves up two spots to No. 7, while Penn State slides backwards from No. 5 to No. 8.

Utah has found its stride in recent weeks and recently picked up its best win of the season. The Utes managed soggy conditions far better than PAC rivals Arizona on their way to a dominant 53-3 victory over the Wildcats. The one-sided win improves Utah’s ranking for a second consecutive week.

Clemson proved it still has plenty of work to do in order to be considered among the best in the Mid-South Conference. The Tigers were not able to keep things close with Arkansas State, allowing the Red Wolves run off with a 76-24 win in South Carolina. Its inability to hang tough with Arkansas State drops Clemson behind Air Force at No. 19.
