Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 9

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 9

BOULDER, Colo. – A weekend without upsets produced only two minor changes to the Canterbury D1A Top 20.

Cal Poly moves into the top 10 after Wheeling Jesuit fell back one spot to No. 11. The Cardinals picked up two nonconference wins over Delaware and Loyola, but their 3-3 Rugby East record has finally caused a minor slip in the rankings. Wheeling Jesuit plays its final conference game Nov. 7 against West Virginia. A bonus point win against the Mountaineers will push the Cardinals above .500 and a fourth-place finish in Rugby East.

Colorado State jumped to No. 14 in Canterbury’s rankings this week. The Rams were idle over the weekend, but were the beneficiaries of the 44-point loss suffered by Iona. A short-handed Gaels team couldn’t keep pace with an inspired Penn State squad, and, as a result, dropped to No. 15 this week.

Currently sitting just beyond the Top 20 are a couple of Red River Conference teams in LSU and Texas A&M. Those two squads, along with Oklahoma (No. 24), will have plenty of opportunities to crack the Canterbury rankings next semester.

Big Ten Universities’ top four sides butt heads Nov. 7, which should created additional movement in next week’s rankings. No. 20 Michigan is set to hot No. 13 Ohio State, while No. 5 Indiana will pay 12th-ranked Wisconsin a visit. Furthermore, a pseudo-Rugby East title game between Penn State and Kutztown this weekend has potential to shakeup the top 10.
