LAFAYETTE, Colo. – USA Rugby is thrilled to announce that the Saturday, May 6, D1A Rugby National Championship to be played at Saint Mary’s Stadium in Moraga, Calif., will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.

“This is part of a broader plan as we look to build on the initiative we’ve set forth surrounding elite college rugby,” USA Rugby CEO Dan Payne said of the announcement. “This is very positive news for the current year, however, the broader plan includes a multi-year broadcast partner and several commercial partners. Both of which we are currently in discussions with.”

The May 6 broadcast of the D1A Rugby National Championship will air live on CBS Sports Network starting at 7 p.m. ET. CBS Sports Network has been a steadfast proponent of men’s and women’s college sports since its launch in 2002. As the 24-hour home of CBS Sports, CBS Sports Network airs 35 college sports, including nine NCAA championships.

“We couldn’t be happier to have CBS Sports Network as a broadcast partner for our 2017 National Championship event,” said D1A Rugby Commissioner Kevin Battle. “CBS will provide the televised platform and professionalism that our student-athletes and elite collegiate programs deserve.”

The exposure CBS Sports Network will provide D1A Rugby in May is just the beginning of a committed strategy to brighten the spotlight on USA Rugby’s largest membership base – college rugby.

“The plan is to continuously expand the reach and awareness across multiple divisions, codes and genders,” Payne added. “This is made possible due to several very interested sponsors surrounding D1A.”

Saint Mary’s College hosted last year’s D1A Rugby National Championship as part of the 2016 USA Rugby College 15s National Championships. Life University and Saint Mary’s reached the 2016 D1A Rugby Final for a fourth consecutive season. Last May, the Life Running Eagles outlasted the Gaels in an exhilarating championship fixture, 24-20.
