D1A Rugby Top 20 – Week 2

D1A Rugby: D1A Rugby Top 20 – Week 2

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – The second week of the D1A Rugby Top 20 didn’t witness much change from the initial rankings of the 2016-17 season. Rugby East’s opening weekend and a host of nonconference matches did, however, produce a couple changes within the top-half of the rankings.

2015 Big Ten Universities Champions Indiana posted another shutout this past weekend, this time hammering Bethel College, 72-0. The third consecutive preseason win of the Hoosiers bumps them ahead of Utah to No. 6. Indiana will play its first conference match of the season as the Big Ten opens play Saturday, Sept. 17. The Hoosiers will travel to East Lansing to begin its title defense against Michigan State.

Army did well to overcome an early deficit to beat Iona. Still, the 16-5 win at home against the unranked Gaels drops West Point two places to No. 10 in this week’s rankings.

The third week of the D1A Rugby Top 20 could see more movement with a few ranked teams stepping onto the pitch for the first time this fall. No. 11 Davenport will get its first run out of the season against Western Michigan. Meanwhile, No. 9 Utah will head to the United States Air Force Academy to take on the 12th-ranked Zoomies in a nonconference contest. The Utes are holding firm to its already penned West Conference schedule for the fall after the program’s spring competition, PAC Rugby, joined D1A.

Wisconsin, Iona, Clemson and Colorado remain on the cusp of the Top 20, while Delaware will have some work to do in order to inch back into Top 20 consideration following its loss to Rutgers.
