Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 7

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 7

BOULDER, Colo. – Iona’s upset win over Army and a nonconference game between Indiana and Davenport helped to produce the biggest shakeup the Canterbury D1A Top 20 this fall.

The Gaels not only dealt West Point its first loss of the season, but did so by 17 points. The surprising margin of victory not only gets Iona back in the Top 20, but lifts the program to No. 13 in the rankings. For Army, the loss drops the cadets back three spots to No. 7.

Blowout wins in the Big Ten weren’t improving Indiana’s place in the Top 20, but its win over Davenport this past weekend did. The Hoosiers narrowly upended the Panthers, 18-17, and moved up three spots to No. 5 as a reward for the well-earned victory. Davenport wasn’t the only Mid-South side to compete in nonconference action over the weekend. Life played its first match of the season, and did so in convincing fashion – a 43-0 blowout of Clemson. As impressive the shutout was for the Running Eagles, it might be difficult to oust back-to-back D1A National Champion Saint Mary’s while the team is idle. The Gaels held their No. 1 spot in the rankings last year until it fell to Utah, before taking back the top spot after beating Life in the D1A Final.

Ohio State and Wisconsin remained unbeaten with lopsided victories. Both teams won’t be undefeated this time next week, as the No. 12 Badgers visit No. 14 Ohio State this Saturday.

All four ranked West Conference teams were in action this past weekend, and all four sides have a different ranking this week. Utah and Colorado State each took care of business, improving the Utes to No. 4 and the Rams to No. 16. One losing side saw a minor drop, as Colorado fell from No. 17 to No. 19. Meanwhile, getting manhandled, 56-13, by Colorado State caused Air Force to take this week’s biggest tumble. The Zoomies’ inability to keep pace with the Rams caused a drop from No. 12 to No. 18.

Michigan, a team that booted Iona out of the Top 20 after defeating Minnesota, 59-5, was this week’s casualty given Iona’s return. The Wolverines were just narrowly edged out by LSU for this week’s 20th spot on the list.
