MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary’s made quick work of an Air Force team coming off yesterday’s 43-17 win over Cal Poly. On a dry California afternoon, the Gaels played their fast-paced, yet unselfish brand of rugby and defeated the Zoomies 77-17 to reach another D1A Semifinal.
The reigning D1A National Champions reached the half-century mark on the scoreboard by halftime thanks to eight tries scored by eight different players.
Captain Kevin O’Connor and full back Nick Schlobohm dotted down to open the second half and stretch The Gaels’ lead to 60-0 before Air Force earned its first score in the 50th minute through the hands of Colin Culver.
The Zoomies refused to lay down and put in two more tries in the game’s final ten minutes, but so did Saint Mary’s All-American Dylan Audsley – who was rewarded with his first try of the game after spending the afternoon setting up scores and knocking through conversions.
The victory gives the No. 2-ranked Gaels six days to prepare for a Semifinal fixture against No. 5 Utah. Saint Mary’s traveled to Salt Lake City to take on the Utes back in March, and grinding out a 57-50 win.
