D1A Rugby: Red River teams announce coaching additions

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – A pair of teams from the Red Rive Conference have recently announced additions to their coaching staffs.

The University of Texas has a new head coach in Zach Mizell. The former Arkansas State All-American takes over for Chris Hopps, who led the program for several years.

Mizell, already familiar with Austin from his days playing full back for the Austin Blacks, takes over a Longhorns program that limped to a 2-10-1 Red River record over the past two seasons. Mizell has also represented USA Rugby playing for the Men’s Eagles Sevens.

In College Station, Texas, the Aggies have already lined up a replacement for the team’s backs coach Phil Grieve. Texas A&M is welcoming home Aggie alumni Ryan Marshall as backs coach starting in the 2017-18 season.

After graduating from Texas A&M, Marshall played senior club rugby for the Dallas Griffins and Houston United, and was coaching Katy Barbarians RFC high school team the past four years. Marshall joins an A&M coaching staff led by head coach James Lowery. The Aggies went 5-3 during the 2016-17 Red River Conference season, and most recently posted a 3-3 record during the 2017 USA Rugby College 7s National Championships.
