With only five rounds of D1A Action left before the playoffs begin, lets take a look at how the Playoff Picture is shaping up. Before the Official Bracket is announced Live on FloRugby, on March 31 at 1pm CT, see what it would like if they started today.
With the change of the format the bracket will look slightly different to what it has in previous years. The East will see four conference winners as their top seeds and automatic qualifiers; while the West will have three conference winners and the highest ranked non-conference winner as its top four seeds.
In the East, defending champions, Life University, currently hold the lead in the Mid-South and would take the top spot. Army would receive the number two seed in the East, due winning Rugby East and being ranked 4th nationally. Wisconsin, by virtue of their Big 10 championship gets the third seed and Oklahoma would receive the four seed. Positions 5-8 would then fall to Arkansas State, Lindenwood, Penn State and Navy respectively.
Currently the number one seed in the west would be going to Cal as the non-conference winning automatic qualifier. This is because, even though they are currently trailing Arizona in the PAC standings, they are still the highest ranked team in the West. Saint Mary’s who are leading the California Conference, get seed number 2. Seed 3 would go to BYU for winning the Rocky Mountain and the 4th seed goes to Arizona, as they are the lowest ranked conference leader, currently. Seeds 5-9 in the west would go to Central Washington, Utah Valley, UCLA and Grand Canyon respectively.
The Liberty Conference declined their spot in the playoffs, to focus on their sevens season.
