BOULDER, Colo. – The Golden Bears of Kutztown have been on a tear this season, dispatching the likes of Army, Iona, and Wheeling Jesuit. One player that has been instrumental in the success of Kutztown this season has been flanker Jordan Ghyzel, whose efforts have earned him Rugby East Player of the Month honors for the month of October.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior from Ontario, N.Y., scored seven tries during the month of October, including two against Army and two against Iona. This was the toughest stretch of the schedule for the Golden Bears, playing five matches in October, and Ghyzel had at least a try in each one.
Ghyzel also produced in other aspects of the game, and was seen flying all over the pitch. He is a great lineout jumper, which was exemplified in the match against Army. Ghyzel was able to score an early try in Kutztown’s match against Army, rolling into the try zone off of a good Golden Bears scrum. He also is a stalwart on defense, a player who Kutztown Head Coach Dr. Gregg Jones can always count on to make a tackle.
“Jordan Ghyzel is a hugely underrated star for Kutztown and I rate him among the top flankers in the country,” said St. Bonaventure Head Coach Clarence Picard. “He is rarely mentioned because of his big name teammates and other great players around the conference. Every team in Rugby East has a stud open side flanker, but he’s the best.”
He will undoubtedly be a huge factor in Kutztown’s last match of the season against Penn State, one that will decide the Rugby East Champion.
Ghyzel joins Army’s Donny Goff, who was Rugby East’s September Player of the Month, as the conference’s monthly recipients.
