Top 20 Rankings – Round 7

D1A Rugby: Top 20 Rankings – Round 7

An incredibly satisfying D1A weekend had graced us with many top performing clubs shaken-up within the rankings. Some very surprising underdog wins, while others were won handily to secure their spot, for now.

The biggest shakeup in the league was the previously unranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish beating the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. On the Bubble, #21 Notre Dame had held off the impressive #16 St. Bonaventure attack late in the game to secure possession and come away with the close 13-10 victory. Unfortunately for the Bonnies, this is their second consecutive loss, along with their first loss to an unranked opponent in over 3 years. Notre Dame had previously been On the Bubble this season, but due to losing a quick couple games in the beginning of the year, they have now found themselves with a resurgence of confidence moving forward.

In the Match of the Week, powerful Kutztown had taken down the valiant Penn State side in this monster of the East matchup. The #7 Kutztown Golden Bears did not move in the rankings, while #9 Penn State dropped a spot due to, now #8 BYU, having such an impressive win over conference rival Air Force. The Golden Bears stuck to their fluent style of play and reassured themselves as Kings of the East with the 34-24 victory over the Nittany Lions. Look for Penn State to bounce back against a tough opponent in their cross-conference foe, #14 Davenport.

Due to the St. Bonaventure loss, the shakeup of teams occurred from #13 – #16, with the Bonnies falling three places, and #13 Central Washington, #14 Davenport & #16 Iona all moving up one spot, respectively. Even though Iona was the only team, of those who moved up, to play this past weekend, their result was domination over the Liberty conference’s Stony Brook.

#19 Ohio State and #20 Indiana traded places over the week after the Buckeyes handily defeated Michigan, 57-14, while the Hoosiers had a solid victory over their conference rival, Wisconsin, 44-3. Ohio State has been improving their overall points per game in a close conference, with an exclamation point over the weekend that provided them a bump in the rankings.

Big movement within the five OTB (On the Bubble) teams with Notre Dame now at the top after their win against ranked St. Bonaventure. Since the Fighting Irish climbed to the top of this list, the remainder of the teams had decreased a spot. Unfortunately for Utah Valley, previously #24, they have found themselves off the list due to their 1 point loss to conference opponent, Colorado.

Plenty of teams have been clamoring for a spot either in the Top-20 or within the Bubble, and with another potential shakeup this upcoming weekend, could see some of those clubs climb the ladder.
