After the dust had settled from Week Three’s helter-skelter results the Top 20 rankings looked remarkably different to where they started. Week four, by comparison, was remarkably tame. With a battery of Top 20 teams matching up against each other, it was the perfect opportunity for some to show they were made of sterner stuff, and prove they were deserving of a higher ranking.

One such team was San Diego State who came into the weekend looking for redemption after they suffered an upset at the hands of Grand Canyon. They had the perfect opportunity as they faced off against defending National Champions Saint Mary’s. However, redemption was not in the cards for the Aztecs as they fell to the Gaels 62-5. The Aztecs now have to wait to see if they are going to drop any further in the rankings.

In another Top 20 fixture, Lindenwood squared up against Central Washington. The Wildcats have been trying to climb back up the rankings since a significant loss at to Saint Mary’s, and Lindenwood provided the opportunity they so desperately craved. Their craving was not satisfied. CWU turned in a remarkable performance and kept it close with Lindenwood, but ultimately, they ran out of gas at the end and fell 27-15. CWU now had to wait to see if they were going to fall further in the rankings, and possibly out of the top 20.

BYU, who entered the weekend ranked 3rd in the country, took on Grand Canyon who were looking to back up their upset against CWU. Unfortunately, Grand Canyon’s defense, which had been the story against SDSU, wasn’t up to scratch as they let in multiple tries from more than 40 meters out. CWU had been ranked nationally for the first time, but was it over as quickly as it began?

Elsewhere other D1A teams continued to compete. In the Red River, Baylor scored themselves a bonus point win in harsh conditions against Houston, and UC Davis won their first game in the California Conference. Both teams would be hoping that they had done enough to reach the Top 20.

Despite all the potential for moving up and down the ladder, there were no changes to the rankings this week.
