D1A Rugby’s rankings have been released with most of the movement within the bottom half of the Top-20 once again, along with plenty of arrivals and departures within The Bubble bracket.
Welcome to Week 5 of D1A Rugby folks, where enough games have been played to give the public steady statistics to understand which teams are for real, dark-horses, and quite possibly sleeping giants. The bigger the games, the bigger the moves within the Top-20, and especially this week, the OTB (On The Bubble) teams. The biggest, and most notable, movement from last week is Indiana substantially moving up from #23 OTB, to #19. The big win versus (now) #20 Ohio State in last week’s Battle for the Mitten matchup, had the Hoosiers soar past the Buckeyes in the rankings ladder.
Due to facing-off with D1A’s top current squad, #5 Navy, the now #15 Davenport Panthers had lost in a close matchup, by a 10 point deficit, to a very tough and valiant opponent while earning the respect of the judges. After a big-time beat-down of conference foe, #17 Iona jumped two spots in the rankings after gaining a W against Fordham, winning 79-10. This formidable triumph has set Iona on the path of gaining ground upon the nation’s best.
Another decent step-up is, now, #21 Colorado State Rams knocking on the door of cracking the Top-20 for the first time this year. Even though they are facing-off against #10 BYU, granted a win would surely have them soar upward, but if they lose in a close fashion, this could help them earn the respect of the voters.
Unfortunately, the clubs to decline in the rankings while out-of-season were: #16 UCLA, #18 Grand Canyon, #22 UC Davis (new OTB club), and #23 Clemson. Come Spring 2020 season, we are sure these clubs will be making moves to earn back the rankings which they’ve lost this Fall 2019.
