D1A Rugby: University of Notre Dame Men’s Rugby disciplined for ineligible players

The University Notre Dame Men’s club rugby team has been found in violation league eligibility rules. The disciplinary panel finds that University Notre Dame Men’s team intentionally and willfully played multiple ineligible players in multiple league matches this past fall. Additionally, the panel finds that Notre Dame University delayed the submission of league documents to help hide this indiscretion. This documentation was due October 1st, but was not submitted until December 5th after their fall season had concluded.  Accordingly, this panel suspends from further play the entire men’s Notre Dame University rugby team and also suspends the head coach and Director of Rugby Mr. Justin Hickey.

  • Accordingly, this panel, on behalf of the league, suspends from further play the entire men’s Notre Dame University rugby team and also suspends the head coach Mr. Hickey.
  • Additionally. the team shall pay a $500 fine for this violation along with an additional payment of $5,000 for an Early Withdraw (from the league) penalty. 
  • All the matches with the ineligible players from this past fall will also be deemed forfeited matches to the opponents.

Those matches include the following: 

  • 9/7 v Ohio State
  • 9/13 v Indiana
  • 10/11 v St Bonaventure
  • 10/23 v Syracuse
  • 10/25 v Michigan
  • 11/3 v Kutztown
  • 11/22 v Boston College

The suspension for the team shall last until June 1, 2020. The suspension for the head coach will last until February 27, 2021.
