UC Davis hosted #4 Saint Mary’s in the first 2019 matchup of the California Conference this past weekend, with the Gaels winning 78-3 over the Aggies. Saint Mary’s opened up the scoring early, as flanker Anthony Rodriquez crossed the try line in only the second minute of the match. Fly half Joe Yacoubian successfully converted Rodriquez’s try, and would go on to convert nine of the twelve tries scored by the Gaels on the day.
Saint Mary’s entered half time with a commanding lead over UC Davis, leading 42-3. Coming out of halftime loose head prop Payton Telea scored back to back tries in the 45th and 48th minutes of the game. After a flurry of substitutions from both sides, and two more tries from the Gaels, the score stood at 61-3 entering the final ten minutes of play. Scrumhalf Sean Yacoubian scored his second try of the game in the 70th minute of the match, and was soon followed by hooker Hayden Warneke who scored in the 73rd. The final try of the match came in the 78th minute via reserve loose head prop Alex Shinohara, who pushed the score to 78 and capped off a commanding win over UC Davis for the Gaels.
The Saint Mary’s forward pack controlled most of the game, as seven players from the forward pack scored for the Gaels, totaling in 45 points on the day from the forwards. Their performance at the set piece and breakdown also helped contribute to the Gaels domination of UC Davis this weekend.
Another standout from the game for Saint Mary’s was scrumhalf Sean Yacoubian. Yacoubian directed the forwards around the field and helped contribute to the forward packs success in this game. Yacoubian also proved to be an attacking threat in the game, managing to sneak across the try line twice in the game.
UC Davis scored their lone points of the match via a penalty kick in the 33rd minute by wing Tarik Siniora.
Saint Mary’s will face Grand Canyon University next week while UC Davis have a bye week to refine their game plan and skills before moving forward with their season.
