On Thursday USA Rugby released their roster for the upcoming Americas Rugby Championship (ARC). Amongst those who were selected was the 20 year old prop from Lindenwood University, Chance Wenglewski, the only college player to have been selected in the squad.
“It is truly memorable, a great honor, and I am humbled by the invitation. I understand that that these selections are difficult and to be named in the squad is nothing but great.” Wenglewski commented when asked about his selection.
The Junior originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma says that he has been the result of years of hard work: “I’ve been preparing myself since high school. Constantly bettering my strength, skills, and knowledge working my way up the tiers to where I am now.”
Wenglewski’s preparations have clearly paid off as he was named to the 2016-2017 1st XV Collegiate All American’s squad, after having been an honorable selection the year before. It was performances as an All American that helped secure his selection in the squad according to USA Men’s National Team General Manager, Dave Hodges: “He has stood out in the collegiate game and as an All American.”
When asked to look ahead to the ARC and see if there were any games that he may have circled in the calendar Wenglewski humbly responded: “I can’t pick one. All the matches are and will be an honor to take part in, and I plan to give it my all when the opportunity comes.”
The seasoned and mature answer only further proves what Hodges sees in terms of maturity on the field: “He’s young, and as a prop he is someone starting to perform ahead of schedule”.
